About Us

History of the DEC integrated behavioral system

Behavioral Healthcare Providers (BHP), a non-profit organization, began serving people with behavioral needs in 1995 and has worked since that time to establish a quality network of over 2,700 mental health providers. In 2002, through the use of this network and the development of two innovative on-line applications, BHP, in a partnership with the University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview, opened the first site using the DEC integrated behavioral system in the Fairview Riverside emergency department .

In developing this system, BHP wanted to help hospitals place mental health professionals in the emergency department setting to assist the emergency physicians to properly assess patients presenting with a behavioral crisis.  It was also important to develop technology to support the provision of a standardized and comprehensive crisis assessment tool; create immediate access to the most appropriate care and improve coordination of care.

The DEC integrated behavioral system allows patients to leave the emergency department with their follow up care coordinated for them.  It also allows providers to immediately obtain the crisis assessment completed electronically so they know if their patient has been admitted or referred back to them.

BHP continually works toward advancing our mission to enhance behavioral health through innovation.  We strongly believe that the DEC integrated behavioral system improves care for patients and communication between providers by leveraging technology and relationships of behavioral programs and providers.  BHP's commitment to providing innovative, high quality, efficient and cost effective care using the DEC integrated behavioral system has been recognized on a local, state and national level.  Our dedication to improving the behavioral care patients receive is apparent to all of our health systems and other partners.
